The portable gramophone-radio JVC Nivico RS2100LA from 1964 is like a Swiss army knife among portable devices of its time. It combines a radio, gramophone, and battery operation – all in a compact plastic body weighing less than 2 kg. JVC, or Japan Victor Company, was founded in 1927 as the Japanese branch of the American firm Victor Talking Machine Company, then a leader in the field of phonographs and record discs. In Japan, the Victor brand is still used today, often accompanied by the iconic "His Master's Voice" logo – with a dog listening to a gramophone. Abroad, however, the company presented itself as JVC or Nivico, because the rights to the "Victor" brand outside Japan were owned by other companies.
