Mills Throne of Music – A Royal Icon of Sound

The Mills Throne of Music, launched in the early 1940s, lives up to its regal name. With glowing columns, gleaming chrome, and bold Art Deco lines, it wasn’t just a jukebox — it was a statement piece.

Made by Mills Novelty Company, one of the giants of early American amusement technology, the Throne of Music played up to 40 songs from 20 records. At a time when jukeboxes were transforming bars and cafés into dance floors, this machine was a true showstopper.

Mills started out in 1891 with cigar vending machines, then made waves with the Mills Owl slot machine, which cleverly dispensed chewing gum to avoid anti-gambling laws.

Though the designer of the Throne of Music remains unknown, it’s clear that the company’s in-house team had an eye for drama and style. Today, this jukebox is a collector’s dream — part machine, part sculpture, all charisma.
