This is a truly breathtaking music box from the workshop of Charles Ullman in Auberson, Switzerland. Its exceptional craftsmanship is evident at first glance—not only in the intricate mechanics but also in the beautifully designed case. The front and side panels feature elegant marquetry set into exquisite veneered wood.

The cylinder bears Ullman’s stamp, “Qualite Excelsior,” at the center, and on the left side, a metal manufacturer’s plaque is affixed. The cylinder offers eight melodies that were popular at the time.

However, behind it lies something rarely found in standard music boxes—a set of three moving figurines, one of which is a mandarin striking bells.

Even during the height of music box popularity, this one must have been a truly remarkable piece.
