The Herophon is a mechanical musical instrument from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It plays melodies using a punched cardboard disc, driven by a hand crank. Inside, a clever arrangement of levers and hammers “reads” the holes and triggers the corresponding notes—much like a barrel organ or orchestrion.

Unlike machines that used sturdier media like cylinders or metal plates, the Herophon’s cardboard discs were fragile and not built to withstand the test of time. That makes surviving examples today all the more precious.

Its music is more than sound—it's a living echo of a bygone world: vibrant, slightly nostalgic, and entirely handmade.
